The popular Jazz at MOCA series presents FREE outdoor concerts on the last Friday of every month. Featuring some of the great jazz players locally and globally, Jazz at MOCA appeals to all audience, young and old.

Whenever we go, we pack a large blanket, a few folding chairs, a nice picnic, some candles and pizza for the kids. They love hearing the music while lying on the ground under the stars. Don’t forget to pop into the museum and check out what MOCA is showing.

Best if all – the galleries are open by donation!

The Great Grove Bed Race – Sunday, September 5th

I brought my children to this wacky race last year and we had one of the most memorable days we can remember. It was painfully hot but we could just not tear ourselves away from the fun and hilarity of the day.

We arrived early and were able to walk around and closely examine and laugh at the crazy costumes and “beds” before the actual race began. After sweating through several rounds of the race, we decided to cool off and enjoy lunch in one of the local restaurants. We made it back just in time for the grand finale!!! A truly enjoyable day despite the heat.

Where: Coconut Grove (Miami), FL on the village streets (Commodore & Grand Ave.) nearby breathtaking Biscayne Bay

Racing: The race involves rolling beds down a 1/8^th mile “drag strip” street in Coconut Grove with the local community, individuals, businesses, organizations, and clubs sponsoring the beds. Teams consist of four race-bed pushers and one in-bed rider all racing against the clock until the fastest eight bed teams are determined and race head-to-head for the top position. Prizes are awarded for theme, décor, and racing success.

The Oleta River State Park is a great place for a family to spend the day. If you have young children, the water is shallow, calm and crystal clear with white sand beaches. The trails are wonderful and the water sports are abundant. Pack a picnic, pack your sunscreen then enjoy the great outdoors. For a the true “wilderness” adventure, rent a cabin and spend the night.

Viernes Culturales – Friday, August 27

Since 1960, when Cubans had to leave their homeland, they settled in Miami around South West Calle Ocho (8th Street), known as Little Havana ever since. Artists flourished, painting and opening their studios as art galleries. The last Friday of each month, a colorful and boisterous street fair takes place, called “Viernes Culturales” (Cultural Fridays). Also, artisans and artists put up their tents in the street, within the historic little Havana neighborhood between 14th and 17th avenues.

A fabulous venue for talented, visual artists and entertainers which offers us an opportunity to experience Miami’s diverse Latino Community. Outdoor music, art on the streets and lots of food in between.

Admission is Free

Free Surfing Lessons on Sundays

Miami isn’t really known for it’s great surf, but hit the beach on Sunday mornings and you will see groups of people trying to get up on those boards!! Free surf lessons are offered on Sunday mornings in two different spots on the beach. I brought my three children along with a bunch of their friends and we all had a blast!! The instructors were plentiful, the water was kind, and the boards were great. There were even two year olds out there riding the waves (with a little help from their parents, of course). This is a fabulous Sunday morning activity for the whole family!

Qualified instructors from Hang Loose Surf School will coach participants at Villas by the Sea, in Fort Lauderdale, surf conditions willing. Yes, this place is truly beautiful, lush, incredibly well maintained, serene and spectacular. However, the cost simply made it out of reach for my family of five. Luckily, it has a set your own admission (which can mean no admission) every first Wednesday of the month.

Following a maze of narrow, shaded corridors that led into dramatic open spaces, strolling through this historic landscape and marveling at the diverse palette of tropical and native plants, the beauty and bounty of this tropical world is captivating. I have heard that their mango festival (which takes place in July) is not to be missed.
